Friends in Australia just sent over word after visiting the White Rabbit Collection, a gallery in Sydney featuring the work of contemporary Chinese artists. They were raving about the space, the work and the overall experience. Apparently, they’re not alone, as a quick google search brings high praise from a wide variety of sources.

From the site:

“The Collection started in late 2000 with a handful of pieces. Ten years on, it includes the works of more than 160 artists, in media from calligraphy and oil painting to embroidery, animation, and interactive video. Together they document a decade in which, having fast-forwarded eagerly through the history of modern Western art, Chinese artists leaped into the future with works as boldly original as they were technically masterful.”

There are so many incredible artists in China, it is obviously difficult to narrow them down. But recently the work of talented and accomplished photographer Zhu Hao caught my eye. His images are incredibly strong, thoughtful and carefully crafted. I would love to give one of his photos from the series “Shadow City” a spot on my wall. You can view more of his work here.

Finding Peace in Beijing

Escape the busy Beijing streets at boutique hotel, Cote Cour. A modern environment with a “wealth of China’s classical heritage”, this will certainly become your favorite Asian haven. You may kick back in the lounge or your beautifully appointed room, but you’ll inevitably be drawn to the center of the Cote Cour universe, the courtyard garden. Sure seems like a wonderful way to find a moment of quiet amidst the electricity that is urban China.

Saddened by the End of My Little Dead Dick

Not only are people defying the odds by falling in love in the first place, but when they end up creating something beautiful together…well, we are enamored, hopeful, fascinated. Unfortunately, we’re snapped back into the real world when these relationships end. The photography duo Madi Ju of China and Patrick Tsai of the USA called themselves “My Little Dead Dick” until they recently broke up. You can still view their photos here, here, and here. Their story in Majiu’s words: “I met Patrick online in July 2006, then we met in Macau for the first time. he moved from Taipei to Guangzhou, we travelled to Tibet and Nepal, then we moved to Xiamen, a small city by the sea. Our relationship ended after 2 years in Beijing. this is our photo story about our love and passion. now it’s all the memories.”

It’s no longer a big secret that the arts scene in China is booming, and the main creative HQ in bustling Beijing is the 798 Arts District. The number symbolizes “arts, vanguards, unchained personalities and alternative life goals.” You can learn more about this inspiring enclave here and here.
